Description

We visited National Treasure Matsumoto Castle (Matsumoto-jo) in Nagano Prefecture to watch ashigaru (foot soldiers) fire 400 year old tanegashimas (Japanese arquebus) and muskets and demonstrate the tactics associated with them.

Hate to break it to you, but those are samurai. Despite the very common claim, only a few samurai despised the teppo. Daimyo knew the weapon was very effective, and Oda Nobunaga had an entire gun line of ashigaru and samurai equally using the matchlock at Nagashino. Samurai were originally archers, and ashigaru also used bows, but the yumi (the type of bow they used) took years to master, while the arquebus took only a few days to use well. Of course, the warlords favored the gun.
