Description

The Hiroshima Peace Park Rest House was 170 meters from the hypocenter of the atomic bomb. It was built in 1929 as the Taishoya Kimono Shop in what was then Nakajima-honmachi, a commercial and entertainment district. During the war it was purchased by the Hiroshima Prefectural Fuel Rationing Union and converted into the Fuel Hall in 1944. Built of ferroconcrete, it was one of the only structures in Nakajima-honmachi left standing after the fires where out. Of it's 37 employees, only one survived the bombing because he was in the basement. Currently the building is a tourism center and is under renovation.

Hiroshima, Japan

Amazing that it was able to withstand the over pressure of the bomb, of course, most of the destruction was caused by the fire afterwards.
