Mikasa / Missouri Comparison

Description

I'm comparing the 1902 pre-dreadnought Mikasa (built by Vickers), one of the early battleships, with the 1944 Iowa-class fast battleship USS Missouri  (BB-63) which was one of the last battleships. You can tell just how much the battleships grew over the course of 40 years, though the basic idea remained the same. Both are absolutely fantastic ships to visit and I highly recommend them. It's still surprising the number of Sailors I come across who've been stationed in Yokosuka yet have never visited the little battleship just outside the gate.

Mikasa participated in the Russo-Japanese War (1904-5) and was Adm. Togo's flagship at Tsushima Strait. The Imperial Japanese Navy's defeat of the Russians at Tsushima was the high point of the war which Japan won. She is the last surviving pre-dreadnought.

Missouri served in World War II, Korea, the Gulf War and the instrument of surrender ending World War II was signed on her deck. Both ships are kind of a big deal.

The picture of Mikasa was shot in 2010 and Missouri in 2004. I get around.

The might of the Japanese Empire was reckoned through Mikasa, the rampage of the same empire was stopped onboard Missouri
